Sorting out the terms
The roof edge has parts with names, and the names are worth two minutes. The fascia is the flat board facing you at the edge of the roof. The soffit is the underside, the panel you see when you stand under the overhang and look up. Eave is the general term for that overhang.Knowing the words is not

When somebody says the run follows the fascia, you now know what part of the house they are pointing at.
The reason for that spot
The mounting line was not chosen for looks alone, it is where the constraints line up. The eave is continuous across the elevation, so a run there has length to work with. It is high enough to throw light down the wall, and the overhang shelters the hardware.
The direction the light points
Where exactly the channel sits is a real design decision. Mounted under the soffit, it throws down the face of the house, which lights the building itself. Mounted on the fascia, the run itself is what you see from the street. Which one is right comes out of the design conversation. The eave line also determines how far down the wall the light reaches, which is why the same house can look very different depending on where the channel ended up.
Not every house is straightforward
Not every roof has a generous overhang. A deep overhang shelters the hardware well and lets you tuck the channel out of sight, but it also shades the wall below. A shallow one exposes the run more and changes where the channel has to sit. None of it can be judged from a photo.
What the eave line is worth on an ordinary night
A lit eave line does real work on a normal evening. The practical version is being able to see the steps, which is not a small thing in February. A house with a lit edge looks like somebody lives there.
A practical scheduling note
The eave line is shared real estate. If a roof or a gutter replacement is coming in the next year or two, say so during the consultation. Doing it out of order costs a second visit. It is worth mentioning even if the roof work is only a maybe.
Two story houses have two eave lines
A single story house has one line to consider. Add a floor and the plan has a decision in it. The top edge is the one that defines the house. A lower eave over a porch or a garage adds a second line closer to eye level, which does more practical work. Running both is often the answer, though it does not have to happen in the same year.
