Custom is on every website in this trade. It costs nothing to say and it is not a claim anybody checks. The test is not what they say. It is whether anything was drawn before you were asked to decide.Keep that straight while you are comparing companies. A package is a price with a description attached. A design starts with your building and arrives at a number. Both are legitimate ways to sell. Only one of them answers

What a design contains
A real design specifies the property, not the product. Scope should be written down feature by feature, since a general phrase leaves room for disagreement. It says what the standard white is. It says where power comes from. And it says what is deliberately being left dark.
The sequence that protects you
A price without a design is a guess wearing a decimal point. The cheaper number frequently covers a smaller scope, which only becomes clear at night after the install. With a plan on the table, the number means something. When the price comes first, scope gets trimmed to hit it.A plan you understand gives you something to check the finished job against, which is worth more than any assurance given in a driveway.
Your part in the design
A good design conversation involves a lot of asking. Where do you walk after dark. Is the patio used at night. Is this mostly a holiday purchase or an everyday one. Do you host. Those answers shape the design as much as the building.
Design lets one plan cover several jobs
Most properties end up wanting several things. Bought separately over several years, they never quite agree: inconsistent color, uneven brightness, no hierarchy. One plan, installed over time if necessary, still ends up coherent.
You are allowed to push back on the plan
A design is the start of a conversation. You can take runs out without needing a reason beyond not wanting it. A company unwilling to revise is not really designing for you. The answer should be that revisions are expected.
The plan is a document you keep
Ask to be sent the plan, and keep it. It matters when you sell, when you add the second stage, or if anybody ever has to work out what is where. A company reluctant to hand over the plan is telling you something about how they see the relationship.
